Nothing goes to waste!

I took a day off work today because I thought there might be a window of opportunity to go to the garden and plant my carrots. The weather was cool but nice. I managed to sandwich my visit in between rain and a hailstorm.

The big wire composter came with me along with a bag of leaves to throw in it from our back yard. Nothing goes to waste. Yesterday I dug up a few poppies and took them as well. Not sure how they will make out as the root system didn't look too great but they might survive. At my allotment garden flowerbed the bee balm is starting to spread so hopefully I will be able to sneak some back to the house for the hummingbirds. While there I planted a couple rows of carrots and beets and started to string up a better frame for my peas, which are also coming up! Yay! Loved the look of this one from Fine Gardening.

Mine is how do you say it, more rustic, but as long as it works, I don't care. The potatoes are starting to appear as well. Radishes and the lettuce greens are also starting to pop up. The potatoes that I planted in the bags at home don't look too hopeful. Pretty soggy mess. I have a sneaking suspicion that they might have all rotted in there. I did plant 6 leftover potatoes in the side garden so there should be lots.

London Drugs had a steal of a deal on a raised bed which is kind of odd as it isn't the usual stuff they sell. It was put out by Gardening for Dummies and is in a kit form. It plastic and you can make it taller by putting one on top of the other and it comes with the brackets. Was very reasonable and a lot less hassle for my home garden. Will post a picture when it is set up.

The little indoor seedlings are doing pretty well. The flower seeds are great and the tomato plants are now working on their little second leaves and they actually look like tomato plants. Still a ways to go thank goodness as it is only halfway through April. Of course once they get bigger I am going to have to transplant them into larger pots and then harden them off. Not really looking forward to that part of the process.

After all my hard work I am looking forward to a nice pasta dinner tonight. The sauce had some of those small tomatoes and grated zucchini from my last years garden. I should have roasted the tomatoes but I ran out of time and just threw them in a zip lock bag. Not sure how this will work as it seems pretty liquid. I picked some of last years kale at the garden today as it was actually looking pretty good so I threw it in my tomato sauce. Hopefully it won't be too bitter. Yes, nothing goes to waste. For sure I will be adding lots of cheese. Everything is better with cheese.

Bon Appetit!
